Rock For Greed

Today, a rage against some music “news” I’ve been sitting on.

Barbra Streisand canceled at least one show in Italy after a national outrage regarding her proposed ticket prices ($200 – $1,200). But that doesn’t come close to the exclusive price some are paying for their piece of pop-rock paradise.

Just go to the Hamptons (if you’re not there already), where for $15,000 you can see 5 concerts — yes, at only 3k a pop — featuring some artists who should be ashamed of themselves. Tom Petty, Dave Matthews, and Prince — all of whom previously touted a DIY, if not, keep-prices-low for the everyday consumer approach — are 3/5 of this bill which also features Billy Joel and James Taylor. If that’s not enough to lull you to sleep, at least your money will get you a chef, ottomans and day-beds, free parking(!), and — one would hope — an appearance from John Lennon, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Tupac Shakur, or some combination therein. The “event,” called (SOCIAL) is billed as “the ultimate rock n’ roll fantasy” and is sold only as a package (the five individual concerts take place over the course of five Saturday’s in July-Aug).

Oh, and it’s invitation only — can you be so lucky as to be invited to spend $15,000 to embarrass yourself and put to shame any of the respectable music these shameful impostors waste on you?

As if we need another sign of approaching apocalypse, the purple one has gone a step further towards total mind-loss, signing back up with Columbia to release his next record, “Planet Earth,” after cursing the major labels for much of the past quarter century.
